The Mt Shasta Ski Team is a youth racing program that provides quality coaching in basic skiing and ski racing for children ages 6-12. The goals of the Mt Shasta Ski Team are to:
- Provide a competitive and challenging race program that emphasizes fundamentals, fun, teamwork, sportsmanship, camaraderie, and discipline
- Maintain an affordable program that involves young athletes and their families
- Provide an evaluation process that encourages our athletes to advance as far as possible
- Provide a fundamental and progressive program that integrates the philosophies of the US Ski Association.
There are three programs of increasing athlete commitment and challenge within MSST. Click here for a quick overview of all our programs. More information below:
Development Program:
A fun introduction to fundamental skiing skills necessary for young athletes to enjoy all areas of the mountain, including the groomed runs, off-run powder skiing, and the terrain park and terrain features within the ski park. The program is intended for children 6 – 12 years old who can put their skis on and take them off, load and unload the chair lift independently, make turns and come to a controlled stop. The program runs 6 Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm with a one hour lunch break from 12-1, and includes a fun race on the last day of the program. Children under 6 may be considered for the program with approval of the program director. Upon completing the Development Program, athletes may have the option to continue the season in the Regional Program.
Regional Program (photo courtesy of Mike McAllister):
This is a longer program, intended for athletes ages 8 – 18 who are interested in improving their skiing skills and also learning to race. The program includes 9 training days and 6 race days. Races are held at the Mt Shasta Ski Park and Ashland Ski Park. Athletes in this program are encouraged to attend all races, and race fees for MSRA-sponsored races (Phil Holecek Sat and Sun, Paul Gianera Race Saturday only) are included in the registration fee. The training days are held on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm with a one hour lunch break from 12-1.
Far West Program:
Visit the Far West page for information on schedules and current activites.
The Far West Program is a more serious training and racing program for athletes looking to challenge themselves and race more competitively. Training begins as soon as the ski park opens in the winter, and continues through the end of April/ beginning of May. Training is held Saturdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with a one hour lunch break. Additional training sessions are held on Sundays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Thursday nights from 5-8 pm. Some mid-week training is also available. Racers have the option of traveling to compete in USSA sponsored races in other areas of California and Nevada, including Lake Tahoe and Mammoth. Travel expenses for these out of area races are the parent’s responsibility. Athletes participating in USSA/Far West races are required to join USSA.
Fundraising
In order to keep our programs as afforable as possible, all MSST athletes are required to meet a $100 fundraising minimum each year. Our primary fundraising opportunity is the annual ski-a-thon/board-a-thon. Athletes collect sponsors for this event and spend the morning skiing or boarding to support their team. Another major fundraiser for the team is the annual dinner auction, which takes place in March. Other fundraising opportunities include holiday wreath sales and an annual raffle.
